Your luxury or custom mattress could cost you $5,000 or more. This expense is more than money well spent, it is an investment in your health and well-being. Therefore, storing your mattress properly protects your investment. Five elements exist for proper storage of your mattress, but understanding the major problem of storage is paramount.

Moisture or condensation causes rust and deterioration of products being stored for extended periods. There's not thing worse than spending several thousand dollars for a product and then storing it after it has gotten wet without an opportunity to dry properly. Mold and mildew can form causing organic products to deteriorate and product rotting smells that can never be removed.

High Quality Fabrics

Condensation can form in even the best wrapped packages over time. Standard fabrics can soak up the condensation and begin to mold and mildew. High quality mattress fabrics with Nano-Technology manipulates the fibers at the microscopic level which allows the fabric to repel moisture. Since the moisture is unable to be absorbed by the fabrics, mold and mildew have a reduced chance of forming.

2-ply Plastic Bags

Two-ply plastic bags are easier to manage and form to the rounded corners of the mattress than 3-ply or thicker plastic. If the bag is large enough, simply slide the mattress into the plastic bag. Otherwise, cut the bag open and wrap it around the mattress. Use durable tape to seal the plastic shut.

Packaging Peanuts

After you have sealed your luxury or custom mattress, you will want to line the cardboard box with packaging peanuts. You can be overly generous with the packaging peanuts especially in high humidity areas. Packaging peanuts are cheap insurance, so don't be afraid to fill the box.

2-ply Cardboard Box

Put a generous amount of packaging peanuts at the end of the 2-ply cardboard box prior to sliding the sealed mattress into the box. After sliding the mattress into the box, be sure to add generous amounts of packaging peanuts on the remaining five sides of the cardboard box to ensure the sealed mattress does not touch the edge of the cardboard box. This helps prevent accidental introduction of water to the mattress if the mattress isn't sealed properly.

After you have filled the box with packing peanuts and inserted the luxury or custom mattress, then completely seal the cardboard box up, use a generous amount of tape.

3-ply Plastic

Cover the box completely with 3-ply plastic, this is very important. If the traditional bag will not work, use the same plastic you would use in landscaping. The important part is to seal the plastic completely, using duck tape in this final step works very well.

Some of you may think this is over kill. Think of it this way, if you were going to bury $5,000 in cash in the ground, would you simply dig a hole and lay the money in it or would you do everything in your power to protect the money? Spending a little time on preparation could save you thousands in the end.

In general, innerspring mattresses should be stood on end; all foam mattresses can be laid flat or stood on end as long as you do not stack other items on top of the protected 2-ply box. A quality luxury or custom mattress is an investment in sleep, nothing worse than starting over. Follow the same steps for the foundation or box spring.

Preventing deterioration by using the five storage elements protects your investment for future use and benefit. Your health and well-being deserves to continually benefit from your luxury or custom mattress.
